What Your Cravings Are Telling You
Your cravings are an indication that something is missing in your body. It’s that simple. Deciphering what your body actually needs is the tougher part.
Many of our cravings have an origin. Salt, sweet, starch and chocolate cravings are all symptoms of poorly functioning adrenals according to Dr. Berg. Fix your adrenals and these cravings should disappear. If you’re feeling tired you’ll most likely be craving sweetness, ie. carbohydrates, or energy.
Have you ever been really thirsty and drinking water simply didn’t cut it or it felt like there was something missing? Adding lemon or lime to your water is a great way to quench that thirst by adding those missing nutrients your body is craving.
Salt is a necessary component in the body’s water balance and blood circulation. If you’re sweating and exercising lots, it’ll be important to replenish your electrolytes. Adding some sea salt to your water is one way. Coconut water is also a tremendous source of electrolytes, and much nicer in taste.
The timing of our cravings can be very telling, especially for women. We are complex beings with a intricate hormonal system designed to create life. Understanding what your cravings are telling you will help you resolve them.
Menstrual Cycle Cravings
1. Ovulation (day 14). Cravings around this time mean there’s an issue with estrogen.
Eat cruciferous veg and sea kelp.
Iodine and cruciferous veg help to balance out estrogen.
2. Right before menstruation. Cravings for chocolate. PMS, moodiness, irritability make an appearance.
This tells us were low on magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin D (good time to get out into the sun) and vitamin C.
3. Menstruation (day 28)
Take calcium + magnesium to help reduce cramping and discomfort
4. Post Menstruation
Take iron to replenish stores.
