Healing Naturally
Shiva Rose needs no introduction. I like to think of her as one of the original spearheaders in women’s holistic health. Her blog, The Local Rose, was born out of a desire to celebrate a holistic, healthy, authentic life style without sacrificing taste and glamour. She was diagnosed with an auto immune condition in her early twenties which propelled her to become a naturalist and activist. Born in Iran, she escaped the revolution at an early age and now calls the Santa Monica mountains in California, home.
Shiva shares her experience with healing her breast and ovarian cysts, the herbs she’s turned to, how she celebrates herself, her favorite piece of advice and resources for women. Oh and don’t miss The Shiva Breast Mask at the end.
Can you tell us a bit about your experience with breast cysts?
I’ve had cysts for many years. The doctors saw them but they didn’t think it was anything malignant. I’ve used different things, for example, one time I used cabbage leaf over time and it went away. Another time I did acupuncture and herbs. I’ve also tried to get more natural progesterone in my diet. It’s something I’ve dealt with for many years. I had fibrocystic breasts in my twenties where they were really painful. I noticed things would shift when I added more green juices and would heal my liver and kidney meridians. Also, not wearing deodorants that have toxic chemicals in them, breast massage using amazing oils, doing castor oil wraps, and breast masks really helps.
I would also check iodine levels. So many of us are iodine deficient as well as magnesium deficient. So many people I know have cysts, ovarian or breasts. There’s so much we can do before we go under the knife. It’s about taking our power back and it’s about listening to ourselves, our bodies.
What are some of the herbs you like that support breast health?
From my research, some of the teas I would have were nettle for helping to clean the liver and I would add red clover because my progesterone was low. Lots of nervine tinctures and teas, like oatstraw. At one point I took some progesterone cream when I had ovarian cysts really bad and it helped a lot.
Did you make any dietary changes?
High estrogen contributes to cysts so I would add sweet potatoes, yams, things that would create more progesterone in my body.
How did you come across this holistic information?
You need the right amount of progesterone so your body can cycle, can get pregnant. And I discovered this way before the internet so I really had to do my own research.
Dr. Christiane Northrup’s book was one of the first books I ever found that really helped. I had to go to a library and find her book. This was way before the internet. Luckily women are in a much better place now. It’s so much easier to research this.
Act From Love Not fear
How did this experience change your relationship to your breasts?
It made me realized they needed to be touched. They needed to be connected to and paid attention. I never really thought that much about them, except how good they looked when I was in a bikini when I was young. I had a child very young and that really changed my relationship. I honored what they could really do. They’re such an incredible erogenous zone. With your site and other sites, they remind me that need extra love and how beautiful they are. Since the beginning of time breasts have been revered as feminine beauty. We have to take it back from the modern take which gives them a lower vibration. It’s nice to reclaim them when we can.
And in Kundalini yoga women have an additional arcline that goes from nipple to nipple.

How do you celebrate and nurture yourself?
I would say my bath rituals, creating beauty rituals with masks and oils. Gathering with other women having ceremonies. We’re all aging and I’m trying to find beauty in that rather than have the fear come in.
I was looking at my belly the other way which has stretch marks from having my children and I could have had it fixed. I mean, I live in the mecca of illusion where anything can be fixed. And I thought, you know what, I like them because they’re a sign of being a warrior, of what I’ve gone through and I’ve birthed 2 children. I’m rather proud of them. I don’t know if aesthetically they pass the test in some circles, but I was giving that area some love.
We don’t trust the body. Somebody once said that when the body isn’t feeling well, it’s like a boat on the ocean, a ship that’s not balancing right but it finds it’s balance eventually. That’s such a good metaphor for me to think of my body in that there are times where it just has to balance itself. It’s finding it’s way.
It’s an experiment in trust. Trusting the universe.Trusting in
in our body. Trusting all of it and how the connection
goes deep.
What advice would you give women who might be struggling with their health?
I would say, find a spiritual outlet. Get into nature more. Definitely eat organic, if you can. Maybe do a blood panel to see what you’re missing as far as minerals go, and where your hormones are. Definitely be optimistic. Our bodies really respond to that. Doctors are incredible and amazing in both western and holistic and I would have one of each, if I had the means. You can go back and forth between the two.
What’s your favorite piece of advice you’ve ever received?
A friend of mine once said when I was really young, and we’ve heard this many times but it’s a good one, act from love not fear. Always ask yourself, is this coming from fear or is this coming from love? This is great if you’re stuck and not sure what to do about something.
What are some of your favorite resources for women’s health ?
I really love Gabby Bernstein’s new book, Super Attractor. I just started reading it. I really like it. She talks a lot about one of the people who’ve influenced my life, Abraham Hicks.
I love all of Dr. Christiane Northrup, Abraham Hicks and Susun Weed’s books .
Here’s a great tip Shiva shared with me when I was talking with her about ‘My’ tumor. She reminded me to take the ‘My’ out. It’s not ‘my ‘ tumor (or any other health issue). It’s not yours. It’s going to move on. That’s it.
